Day 01 : Fez – Cedar Forests – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Sahara Desert :
Today will be the longest drive of our Morocco Desert Tour, from Fez to Marrakech, to our final destination. The drive will take approximately 8/9 hours. However, it does not feel too long because we will have a number of stops to enjoy along the way. Your expert knowledge driver will also provide you with a plethora of interesting facts and insights. Aside from the ever-changing Moroccan landscapes. So, get your camera ready for some amazing shots.
After an early breakfast at your riad/hotel in Fez, our expert local driver/guide will pick you up. To capture the sunset in the dunes. The desert tour will leave the bustle of the city behind( at 8 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. in the winter) as we travel south into the Merzouga desert. Our first stop is to visit Ifrance, Cedar forests, the Anti Atlas Mountains, and the incredible Ziz Valley.
Ifrane town – Cedar forests and the wild Barbary Apes:
After one hour drive, we will stop in Ifrane, a small beautiful mountains village in an elevation of 1700m, referred to as “the Switzerland of Africa”. Because of its modern building and natural landscapes. Ifrane, is one of the famous skiing national park in Morocco. We will perhaps enjoy one of their cafés and take some pictues, before, our Fez desert tour travelling through the Aok, Cherry and apple trees till we reach the famous cedar forests in Azrou. We surly spend some time in this largest and oldest cedar forest in all Morocco, which is the home to a special wild monkey species. The only species of macaques in north Africa, the Barbary macaques or the Apes.
During our stop, we will try our luck at spotting the Barbary Apes. The Macaque’s one of the best known Old World monkey species. The monekys are so cute and fun animals. They live as big comunities, and get their wild food on the forests. They spend their days near the road or parkins, as they get fruit and peanuts from the tourists. Most of our guests they wish spend the whole day, taking pictures, gettig closer to them, watching the babies clinging to mothers, youngsters doing bold jumps, fling themselves from branch to branch. Might you will try to feed them even it’s not a good idea for the wildlife animals, as it will makes them dependant on humans, not to mention the long term effect the bad diet has on their health. So, we advise you to observe and don’t try to touch them or interact with them.
Rugged Atlas Mountains and incredible views
After this monkey watching experience, which could be one of your Moroccan trip’s highlights, our magnificent Morocco desert tour from Fes to Marrakech, will venture through the breathtaking Middle Atlas mountain ranges, and you will surprise how quickly the landscape changes from one stretch of road to the next. From the green cedar forests to rocky barren hills with small mud villages, to the open and flatland of red clay rocks and snowcapped Mountains(during the winter) creating a stunning scenery to drive towards. The agricultural town of Midelt is our halfway point of this this Fes Sahara desert trip, therefore, makes a convenient lunch stop.
After lunch, our 3-day Morocco Fes to Marrakech desert tour, will continue and climbing steadily through the dramatic landscapes. Then, winding us up over the Tizi n’Talremt pass, a rocky mountains of pink and orange hues with unbelievable views. In fact, it is the homeland of the indigenous Berber tribes, who still practicing their culture and traditions up here. Next, we will descend into a beautiful flat landscape with different coloured hill, where the majestic Ziz gorges will start.
III) The the majestic Ziz gorges – Marvelous Ziz Valley and Oasis with its Ksars
The Morocco camel riding experience is waiting for us. However, still have few hours left to drive on the Anti Atlas Mountains, before the vast desert domains. At this point, the spectacular Ziz gorges, will take us through its twists red clifts, where the road wound in a snacking fashion. Here, the landscapes becomes arid and full of spectacular geological formations known as the Moroccan grand canyon. At the end of the gorge, the landscape opens up to reveal the huge Reservoir du barrage Al-Hassan Addakhil. Then, a flat Hamada desert; where you will surprised with the Ziz Valley, a hug Oasis with thousonds of palm trees as far as the aye can see.
As we are getting closer, you will feel the warm breezes of the Sahara Desert, as well as, the the vegetations smell getting from the Ziz Valley; a masif Oasis in the middle of rocky desert. This hidden Oasis, known for green palm tree clusters, one of the dates source to all over Morocco. Along the road, you will see many fortified houses; typical architecture of adobe known as ksars—built to protect precious wares, including gold, salt, and spices.
