Windsurfing Morocco

Windsurfing Morocco starts with one word: wind. Essaouira is nicknamed the Wind City of Africa, because the trade winds blow along this coast for much of the year, strongest in spring and summer. The wide bay is a good classroom, Moulay Bouzerktoun to the north is a famous wave spot, and far to the south the Dakhla lagoon offers flat water on the edge of the Sahara. We organise lessons and rentals with licensed local windsurf centres and instructors.

Whether you are stepping on a board for the first time or bringing your own gear for wave sailing, we plan the trip around the forecast and your level. Off the water there is Essaouira’s medina, grilled fish at the port and the slow pace of a coastal town – a good balance after long, windy sessions.

Why choose windsurfing adventure in Morocco

01

Reliable wind

The trade winds make Essaouira one of the windiest towns in Morocco, especially from spring to late summer. You spend your holiday on the water, not waiting on the beach.

02

Spots for every level

Essaouira bay suits lessons and freeride; Moulay Bouzerktoun is for experienced wave sailors; Dakhla’s lagoon gives flat water for speed and freestyle.

03

Wave sailing at Moulay

Moulay Bouzerktoun, a small village north of Essaouira, is known among windsurfers for wave riding with side-shore wind. It is a spot for confident sailors.

04

A town with character

Essaouira’s walled medina, harbour and art galleries are a short walk from the water. Windsurf days end with fresh fish and sunset on the ramparts.

05

Easy from Marrakech

Essaouira is about three hours from Marrakech by road, so a windsurf trip fits easily into a wider Morocco itinerary.

Who is windsurfing in Morocco for?

Complete beginners

You start on a wide, stable board with a small sail and learn to balance, uphaul and turn in the calmer part of the bay with an instructor.

Improving windsurfers

Work on planing, footstraps and harness in steady wind. The instructors watch the forecast and choose the session times.

Experienced wave sailors

Bring your own kit or rent, and head for Moulay Bouzerktoun or Sidi Kaouki on the right days. We take care of transport and accommodation.

Not ideal for nervous swimmers

The Atlantic is cool and the wind is strong. You should be a confident swimmer and happy to fall in the water many times while learning.

Useful information for windsurfing in Morocco

What a lesson looks like

After a short theory session on the beach, you learn on a simulator or straight on a big beginner board. Wetsuit, board, sail and harness are provided by the centre. Most beginners sail a few metres back and forth on the first day.

Wind strength

Essaouira’s wind can be strong in summer, sometimes too strong for beginners in the afternoon. Lessons are often planned for the morning or for the calmer part of the bay, and instructors may stop a session if the wind picks up too much.

Water and wetsuits

The Atlantic stays cool all year, so a full wetsuit is needed even in summer. Booties are useful at rocky spots such as Moulay Bouzerktoun.

Wave spots are for experts

Moulay Bouzerktoun and other wave spots have shore break, currents and rocks. Only sail there if you are an experienced wave windsurfer, and ask local sailors about the conditions first.

Getting there

Essaouira is about three hours from Marrakech; we arrange transfers and help with board bags if you bring your own gear. Dakhla is far in the south, so most people fly there.

Best time for windsurfing in Morocco

Spring and autumn are a good mix for learners, with lighter wind and fewer gusts. Dakhla has wind most of the year, strongest in the warmer months.

Windsurfing in Morocco: 10 questions

Is Morocco good for windsurfing?

Yes. Steady trade winds, an Atlantic coast with both flat and wave spots, and towns like Essaouira make it one of the best windsurfing destinations near Europe. There are options for beginners and experts.

Where is the best windsurfing in Morocco?

Essaouira is the best-known base, with the bay for lessons and freeride. Moulay Bouzerktoun to the north is famous for wave sailing, and the Dakhla lagoon in the far south offers flat water and steady wind.

Why is Essaouira called the windsurfing capital of Morocco?

Because of its strong, regular trade winds, which earned it the name Wind City of Africa. The wind blows most days from spring to late summer, making it reliable for windsurfing.

When is the windsurfing season in Essaouira?

The strongest and most regular wind is from April to September, with summer often the windiest. Spring and autumn have lighter wind, which can be easier for beginners.

Is windsurfing hard to learn?

The first steps take patience – expect to fall in a lot on day one. With a good instructor, stable board and the right wind, most people sail short runs within a lesson or two. Planing in the harness takes longer.

Is windsurfing harder than kitesurfing?

Windsurfing is usually easier to start, because you can sail slowly on a big board from the first day. Kitesurfing takes longer before you ride, but progresses fast once you do. Both are possible in Essaouira and Dakhla.

Can you go windsurfing in Dakhla?

Yes. The Dakhla lagoon is known for flat water and steady wind, ideal for speed and freestyle. Dakhla is far south, so most visitors fly in and stay for several days.

Is Moulay Bouzerktoun good for beginners?

No. It is a wave spot with strong wind, shore break and rocks, best for experienced wave sailors. Beginners should learn in Essaouira bay first.

Can I rent windsurf equipment in Essaouira?

Yes, windsurf centres in Essaouira rent boards, sails, harnesses and wetsuits. Tell us your level and weight so we can ask for the right gear sizes.

Do I need a wetsuit for windsurfing in Morocco?

Yes, all year. The Atlantic is cool, and the wind makes it feel colder. A full wetsuit is normal, thicker in winter and thinner in summer.
