Canyoning in Morocco: River Canyons of the Atlas Mountains
Canyoning Morocco with specialist local guides: walk river beds, swim in pools and jump into clear water in the canyons of the Atlas. Gear included.
Canyoning Morocco
Canyoning Morocco trips take you inside the narrow river canyons of the High and Middle Atlas, where you walk in the river bed, wade and swim through cool pools, slide over smooth rock and jump into clear water. It is a fun, refreshing way to explore the mountains on a hot day, and on easier canyons you need no experience at all, only to be happy in the water.
We organise canyoning in Morocco with specialist local guides who bring the wetsuits, helmets, harnesses and ropes. Beginners stay on walking-and-swimming routes with small optional jumps, while experienced groups can choose canyons with abseiling. Canyoning depends on the water level and the weather, so availability changes with the season – we confirm each trip with you.
Best seasonLate spring to early autumn
Why choose canyoning in the atlas in Morocco
A cool escape in summer
When the cities and the plains are hot, the shaded canyons of the Atlas stay fresh. Few activities feel better on a summer day in Morocco.
Hidden side of the mountains
Canyons show you rock walls, waterfalls and pools that you cannot see from the road or the usual trekking trails.
Something for every level
Easy canyons are mostly walking and swimming. Experienced groups can add abseils and longer descents with the guide.
Specialist guides and equipment
We organise every canyoning trip with specialist local guides who know the water levels and bring all the technical gear.
Easy to mix with other trips
A canyon day fits well into an Atlas trek or a visit to Chefchaouen and the north.
Who is canyoning in Morocco for?
Active beginners
If you can swim and are happy in cold water, an easy canyon is a great first try. The guide shows you how to move and jump safely.
Groups of friends
Canyoning is a team activity – you help each other over rocks and through pools, and there is plenty to laugh about.
Families with confident swimmers
Older children who swim well can join easy canyons. Jumps are always optional.
Experienced adventurers
Groups with canyoning or climbing experience can ask for canyons with abseils. Canyoning is not for non-swimmers or people with a fear of water.

Useful information for canyoning in Morocco
What to expect in the canyon
You walk on slippery stones in the river bed, wade through shallow sections and swim short pools. On many canyons there are natural slides and small jumps, and the guide always checks the depth first. Every jump is optional.
Water levels and weather
Canyoning depends on the water. After heavy rain or snowmelt the flow can be too strong, and storms can raise rivers quickly. The guide decides on the day and may change the canyon or the date.
Swimming and fitness
You must be able to swim and be comfortable in cold water. A normal level of fitness is enough for easy canyons; technical canyons are longer and more tiring.
Equipment
Guides usually provide wetsuits, helmets and, for technical canyons, harnesses and ropes. Wear shoes with good grip that can get wet – we tell you what to bring for your canyon.
Abseiling
Abseils are only for groups who choose a technical canyon. The guide sets up and checks every rope and explains the technique before each descent.
Before you book
- Swimming
- You must be able to swim – please tell us honestly about your level in the water.
- Health
- Not recommended during pregnancy or with heart, back or joint problems – please tell us before booking.
- Children
- Older children who swim well can join easy canyons – send us their ages so we can confirm.
- Sizes
- Send us your height, weight and shoe size so the guide can bring a wetsuit that fits.
- Water conditions
- Canyons can close after rain or snowmelt, so keep some flexibility in your dates.
Best time for canyoning in Morocco
Canyoning in Morocco is best from late spring to early autumn, when the days are warm and the water is not too high. In early spring the snowmelt can make rivers too strong, and in winter the water is very cold. Late summer usually has the lowest water, which suits beginners.

Wear a swimsuit under the wetsuit and shoes with good grip that can get wet. Bring dry clothes and a towel for after the canyon.
Can children go canyoning in Morocco?
Older children who swim confidently can often join easy canyons with the guide. Tell us their ages and we will confirm the minimum age for the canyon you choose.
How long does a canyoning trip in Morocco take?
Most trips take a full day with transfers, of which a few hours are spent in the canyon. Technical canyons can take longer.
