Mountain Biking Morocco: Atlas Trails & Cycling Tours
Mountain biking Morocco with local guides: Atlas Mountains trails, Agafay rides, gorge roads and e-bike tours from Marrakech, with support vehicle.
Mountain biking Morocco
Mountain biking Morocco’s High Atlas means riding mule paths between Berber villages, rolling down terraced valleys and stopping for tea where the trail meets a walnut grove. Our guides know the tracks around Marrakech, the Ourika and Imlil valleys and the Agafay hills, and pick routes that fit your level – from easy dirt roads to longer climbs and technical descents.
If you prefer road or gravel cycling, Morocco has quiet mountain roads with big views, such as the switchbacks of the Dades Gorge. On multi-day trips a support vehicle carries luggage, water and spare parts, and can pick up tired riders. E-bikes are an option for mixed groups where not everyone rides often.
Best seasonMarch to May, September to November
Why choose cycling & mountain biking in Morocco
Mountains near the city
The High Atlas foothills are about an hour from Marrakech, so a real mountain ride fits into one day.
Village trails, not empty parks
You ride through living Berber villages, past terraced fields and irrigation channels, and meet people along the way.
Huge variety
Dry desert-like plateaus in Agafay, green valleys in the Atlas and dramatic gorge roads further south – all in one country.
Support when you need it
On longer tours a vehicle follows with water, snacks and your bags. Anyone can skip a climb and rejoin later.
E-bikes for mixed groups
An e-bike lets less fit riders enjoy the same route as strong cyclists, so families and friends can ride together.
Who is mountain biking in Morocco for?
Casual cyclists
Choose an easy half day on wide dirt tracks in Agafay or the palm grove. No technical skills needed.
Keen mountain bikers
Longer Atlas rides with real climbs and rocky descents. Tell us about your experience so we can plan the right trails.
Families with teens
Gentle routes and e-bikes make it possible for teenagers and parents to ride together.
Active travellers
Combine cycling with hiking and a desert night on a multi-activity tour. Not suitable for young children on their own bikes on mountain routes.

Useful information for mountain biking in Morocco
What to expect on a ride
We meet or pick you up, fit your bike and helmet, and check brakes and saddle height. The guide leads and explains the route; on full days there are regular stops for water, photos and food. Expect dust, loose stones and some short pushes on steep bits.
Fitness and level
Easy routes suit anyone who rides a bike now and then. Mountain days involve climbing at altitude, which feels harder than at home. Tell us honestly how often you ride and we will adjust the distance and climbing.
Riding on Moroccan trails
Watch for mules, sheep and children on village paths – slow down and say hello. Keep your speed under control on descents, because gravel and sharp turns can surprise you. On roads, ride in single file and follow the guide’s signals.
Bikes and equipment
We provide mountain bikes or e-bikes and helmets. You can bring your own pedals and saddle if you are used to them. Padded cycling shorts make a big difference on longer days.
Heat and water
Even in spring the sun is strong. Carry at least two bottles or a hydration pack, and start early on warm days.
Before you book
- Riding level
- Tell us honestly how often you ride and on what terrain, so we choose the right distance and trails.
- Height
- Send us your height so we can prepare a bike in the right size.
- Bike type
- Tell us if you prefer a mountain bike or an e-bike – e-bikes are a good choice for mixed-ability groups.
- Health
- Mountain days include climbing at altitude – tell us about any heart, knee or back problems before booking.
- Children
- Young children are not suited to mountain routes on their own bikes; teens can usually join easier rides – we confirm with you.
Best time for mountain biking in Morocco
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for mountain biking in Morocco – mild temperatures and green valleys in spring. Winter is good in the lowlands and Agafay, but high Atlas trails can have snow. Summer is too hot except for early morning rides at altitude.

Mountain biking in Morocco: 10 questions
Is mountain biking in Morocco good?
Yes – Morocco has a huge range of terrain, from desert plateaus to High Atlas valleys and gorge roads. Trails pass through villages rather than bike parks, which makes rides feel like real travel.
Where is the best mountain biking in Morocco?
The High Atlas around the Ourika and Imlil valleys is the favourite for mountain trails close to Marrakech. The Agafay hills are great for easy rides, and the Dades and Todra gorges are spectacular on longer tours.
Is cycling in Morocco safe?
With a guide and sensible routes, yes. We avoid busy main roads where we can and use village tracks and quiet mountain roads. On descents and in villages, keeping your speed under control is the main rule.
Can I go mountain biking from Marrakech?
Yes. Agafay rides fit in a half day, and the Atlas foothills are about an hour’s drive away for a full day of trails. We handle transport, bikes and helmets.
Do I need to be very fit for mountain biking in Morocco?
Not for easy routes. Mountain days with long climbs need regular riding experience. E-bikes are a good choice if you want to enjoy the mountains without suffering on the climbs.
Can I hire a mountain bike in Marrakech?
On our guided rides the bike and helmet are included. We provide mountain bikes or e-bikes depending on the route and your preference.
What is the best month for cycling in Morocco?
March to May and September to November are the best months. January and December are fine in the lowlands but cold in the mountains, and July and August are very hot.
Are there e-bike tours in Morocco?
Yes. We can organise e-bike rides around Marrakech, in Agafay and in the Atlas foothills, which is perfect for mixed-ability groups.
Can I combine mountain biking in Morocco with a desert trip?
Yes. Our active desert tour from Marrakech includes cycling, hiking and a camel trek on the way to the Sahara. We can also build a custom route.
Is road or gravel cycling in Morocco possible?
Yes. Quiet mountain roads and long gravel tracks suit road and gravel riders, especially in the Atlas and around the gorges. Tell us your bike type and we will suggest routes.
