Paddle Boarding in Morocco: Calm Bays, Lagoons & Lakes
Paddle boarding Morocco: calm-water SUP lessons and board rental in Taghazout bays, the Dakhla lagoon and Atlas lakes, with licensed local schools.
Paddle boarding Morocco
Paddle boarding Morocco style means standing on a wide board on calm water while the Atlantic, a lagoon or a mountain lake opens up around you. Near Taghazout and Tamraght, sheltered bays are calm on many mornings, the Dakhla lagoon is flat and shallow, and lakes such as Lalla Takerkoust near Marrakech or Bin el Ouidane in the Middle Atlas give you still water with mountain views.
We organise stand up paddle Morocco sessions with licensed local surf and SUP schools: a lesson for first-timers, a guided paddle for people who already know the basics, or simple board rental when the conditions are right. We match the spot to the day, because sea and wind change quickly, and we take care of transport, timing and gear.
Best seasonSpring to autumn; calm days happen all year
Why choose stand-up paddle in Morocco
Easy to learn
On flat water most people stand up within the first lesson. The board is wide and stable, and kneeling is always an option while you find your balance.
Many kinds of water
Ocean bays near Taghazout, a huge lagoon in Dakhla and lakes below the Atlas – few countries give you so many different paddling spots in one trip.
A quiet way to see the coast
From the board you see fishing boats, cliffs and surf villages from the water, at your own pace and without an engine.
Good for a mixed group
Surfers can catch small waves on a SUP while beginners stay in the calm part of the bay. Everyone shares the same session.
Gentle full-body exercise
Paddling works your legs, core and shoulders without the impact of running – a good active break between long drives or desert days.
Who is paddle boarding in Morocco for?
First-timers
If you can swim and stand on a moving surface, a lesson on calm water is the best way to start. Your instructor stays close.
Families
Older children often learn fast and can share a session with parents. Younger children may ride on a parent’s board, depending on the school’s rules.
Surfers on a rest day
When the waves are too big or too small for surfing, a paddle along the coast or a SUP surf session keeps you on the water.
Couples and friends
A relaxed morning paddle followed by lunch by the sea suits most travellers. It is not for non-swimmers or anyone uneasy in deep water.

Useful information for paddle boarding in Morocco
What a SUP lesson looks like
Your instructor fits you with a board, paddle and leash and explains how to hold the paddle and stand up. You start kneeling on calm water, then stand and practise turning and stopping. Lessons usually last one to two hours.
Wind, swell and tides
Stand up paddle needs calm water. On the coast the school chooses the bay and the time of day by the swell and tide; in Dakhla mornings are usually calmer than afternoons. If conditions are not right, we move the session or suggest another spot.
Safety on the water
Always wear the leash, stay in the area your instructor shows you and paddle back early if the wind rises. In the ocean, offshore wind can push you out to sea, so beginners stay inside sheltered bays.
Wetsuit and water temperature
The Atlantic is cool for much of the year, so schools usually provide a wetsuit. Lakes are warmer in summer but cold in winter.
Rental for experienced paddlers
If you already paddle confidently, board rental can be arranged when the school agrees and the conditions are safe. We tell you which areas to avoid.
Before you book
- Swimming
- You must be able to swim – please tell us honestly about your comfort in the water.
- Children
- Send us the children’s ages and swimming level so we can check the school’s rules.
- Conditions
- Sessions depend on wind, swell and tides, so keep some flexibility and we will confirm the time the day before.
- Health
- Tell us about back, shoulder or balance problems, or pregnancy, before booking.
Best time for paddle boarding in Morocco
From May to September the sea is usually calmer near Taghazout and the water is warmer, so this is the easiest time for beginners. Winter brings big Atlantic swell, but sheltered bays still have calm mornings, and Dakhla can be paddled most of the year in the morning before the wind.
