Things to Do in Tangier

Top 10, unique ideas and local tips from our team Updated October 2026

The best things to do in Tangier start with the view: from the white city on the hill you look across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain, with the Mediterranean on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Tangier has welcomed sailors, traders, diplomats, painters and writers for centuries, and that mixed history is still visible in its medina, its cafés and its old legations.

Today Tangier is also a modern, easy gateway to Morocco, a short ferry ride from Spain. Our guides love it as the start of a trip north: a day or two in the city, then the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen, Tetouan and the Atlantic towns of the coast.

In short

The best things to do in Tangier are exploring the kasbah and medina, the Grand Socco and Petit Socco, mint tea at Café Hafa above the strait, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, and the American Legation museum. From Tangier, easy day trips go to Asilah (under an hour), Tetouan and blue Chefchaouen (about 2–2.5 hours).

Tangier with kids

There are good things to do in Tangier with kids. Children love the Caves of Hercules with their Africa-shaped window on the sea, the lighthouse at Cap Spartel and a beach afternoon on the Atlantic coast nearby. Perdicaris Park is great for a picnic and a run in the woods, and the evening corniche is easy with a pushchair. Keep medina walks short and plan a café break with fresh orange juice.

Best time to visit Tangier

Tangier has a Mediterranean climate: mild, wet winters and warm, breezy summers. Spring and autumn are the best time for walking the medina and for day trips to Chefchaouen and Tetouan. Summer is ideal for the beaches but busy with holidaymakers, and winter brings more rain but few crowds.

Getting there & how long to stay

Tangier has an international airport and ferries from Spain (from Tarifa the crossing usually takes about an hour). The high-speed train links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca in a few hours, and from Marrakech the train journey takes most of a day with a change. Plan 2–3 days for the city and its surroundings, plus extra days for Chefchaouen.

Local tips for Tangier

  • Ferries from Tarifa arrive at the port in the city; ferries from Algeciras usually arrive at Tanger Med, far east of the city.
  • Unofficial guides may approach you near the port and the medina – a polite “no, thank you” is enough.
  • The wind from the strait can be strong; bring a light jacket even in summer.
  • Friday is a quieter day in the souks around midday prayers.
  • Petit taxis are cheap for short rides in the city – ask for the meter or agree the price first.
