Rock Climbing in Morocco: The Walls of the Todra Gorge
Rock climbing Morocco in the Todra Gorge: guided sessions on limestone walls for beginners and climbers, with gear included. Join a tour or go private.
Rock climbing Morocco
Rock climbing Morocco trips almost always start in the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon of orange limestone on the southern side of the High Atlas. The walls rise straight up from the river and the palm groves, and they hold many bolted sport routes, from easy slabs to steep, hard lines. With a local guide, even complete beginners can try their first climb here in a safe, roped session.
We organise Todra Gorge climbing with licensed local climbing guides who provide the ropes, harnesses, helmets and shoes. You can book a half-day session, a full day for experienced climbers, or climb as part of our 5-day group tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga desert. Availability depends on the season and conditions, and we confirm the details with you.
Best seasonMarch to May and September to November
Why choose rock climbing in Morocco
A famous canyon to climb in
The Todra Gorge is Morocco’s best-known climbing area. You climb on warm limestone above a river, with palm groves and kasbahs at the foot of the walls.
Routes for every level
There are short, easy routes for a first try and long, demanding ones for strong climbers, so mixed groups can climb together.
On the road to the desert
Todra lies on the classic route from Marrakech to Merzouga, so a climbing session fits naturally into a desert trip.
Local guides who know the walls
Our guides know which sectors are in the shade at each hour and which routes suit your level.
More than climbing
Between climbs you can walk through the gorge, visit the palm groves of Tinghir and meet Berber families who live in the valley.
Who is rock climbing in Morocco for?
Complete beginners
You do not need any experience. The guide sets up the rope from above and teaches you the basics on easy routes.
Experienced climbers
Bring your own gear or use the guide’s, and spend a day on longer sport routes. Ask us about the more remote, advanced areas of the High Atlas.
Families with older children
Children who are comfortable with heights often love a roped session. We check the minimum age with the guide.
Active groups of friends
Climbing is a good shared challenge on a desert tour. It is not ideal for people with a strong fear of heights or serious joint injuries.

Useful information for rock climbing in Morocco
What a beginner session looks like
Your guide fits your harness, helmet and shoes, explains the knots and the climbing commands, and shows you how to move on the rock. You climb on a top rope, which means the rope is always above you and the guide holds it from the ground.
Safety on the wall
Always wear your helmet at the foot of the wall, as small stones can fall. Never untie or change the rope without the guide checking it, and follow the guide’s instructions on lowering down.
Climbing in the heat
The gorge is narrow, so some walls are in the shade while others bake in the sun. Guides choose the sector by the time of day. In summer climbing is usually limited to early morning and late afternoon.
Your own gear
Experienced climbers are welcome to bring their own harness, shoes and quickdraws. Tell us your level and the grades you climb so we can match you with the right guide and routes.
Where to stay
There are simple guesthouses and hotels in the gorge and in Tinghir. We can book your night there or include it in a desert tour.
Before you book
- Experience
- Tell us if you have climbed before and which grades, so we can choose the right guide and routes.
- Health
- Not recommended with serious back, shoulder or knee injuries, or during pregnancy – please tell us before booking.
- Children
- Older children can often climb with a guide – send us their ages so we can confirm.
- Shoe size
- Send us your shoe size so the guide can bring climbing shoes that fit.
Best time for rock climbing in Morocco
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for rock climbing in Morocco, with mild days in the Todra Gorge. Winter is often fine on the sunny walls, but shaded sectors get cold. In summer the heat is strong, so sessions are kept to the early morning or late afternoon.

Yes. Morocco has some excellent limestone, and the Todra Gorge is the best-known area, with many bolted sport routes in a spectacular canyon. There are also remote, advanced areas in the High Atlas for experienced climbers.
Where is the best rock climbing in Morocco?
For most visitors it is the Todra Gorge, because it is easy to reach, has routes for all levels and lies on the way to the Merzouga desert. Experienced climbers also travel to more remote parts of the High Atlas.
Can beginners do rock climbing in Morocco?
Yes. With a local guide, beginners climb on easy routes with a top rope and all the gear provided. No experience is needed, only a reasonable level of fitness.
When is the Todra Gorge climbing season?
The best months are usually March to May and September to November. Winter can be good on the sunny walls, while summer is hot and climbing is kept to the cooler hours.
Do I need a rock climbing guide in Morocco?

Do I need my own gear for Todra Gorge climbing?
No. The guide provides ropes, harnesses, helmets and climbing shoes. Experienced climbers can bring their own gear if they prefer.
How much does rock climbing in Morocco cost?
The price depends on the length of the session, the number of climbers and whether it is part of a tour. Send us your dates and level and we will send you a quote on request.
