Top 10, unique ideas and local tips from our team Updated October 2026
Most things to do in Merzouga happen in or around Erg Chebbi, the great sand sea that rises on the edge of the village. This is the real Sahara of Morocco: golden dunes that change colour through the day, camel caravans, nomad tents and a night sky full of stars. It is the highlight of the trip for most of our guests.
Our guides know the dunes and the families who live around them. Below are the top 10 things to do in the Merzouga desert, four less-known ideas, tips for families and the best months to go. One night in the desert is the minimum – two nights let you enjoy it without rushing.
The best things to do in Merzouga are a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, a night in a desert camp, sandboarding, a 4x4, quad or buggy ride around the dunes and stargazing far from any city light. Around the desert, visit a nomad family, listen to Gnawa music in Khamlia, see the Rissani market and the fossils of Erfoud.

Merzouga with kids
Merzouga is one of the best places in Morocco for children. Most kids love the camel ride, sandboarding down the dunes, hunting for fossils and sleeping in a tent in the desert. Choose a camp with private bathrooms, plan the camel ride for late afternoon, and keep the long drive in two parts – stopping in the gorges on the way makes it much easier for little ones.
Best time to visit Merzouga
March to April and October to November are the best months for things to do in the Merzouga desert: warm days and cool nights. December to February is sunny but cold at night. In July and August it is very hot – activities only early morning and evening.

Getting there & how long to stay
Merzouga is far from the big cities: from Marrakech it is about 9–10 hours of driving, so most people split it over two days through the Atlas and the gorges. From Fes it is about a full day’s drive through the Middle Atlas. The nearest airport is Errachidia, about two hours away; plan at least one night in the dunes, two if you can.
Local tips for Merzouga
- Pack a warm layer even in spring and autumn – desert nights are cold.
- Bring sunglasses, a scarf and sunscreen for wind and sand.
- Keep a small bag for the camp; big luggage usually stays at the hotel in the village.
- Carry cash: there are few cash machines near the dunes.
- Check the moon calendar if stargazing matters to you.
